Hermann Kotzschmar’s widow began a trust in memory of her husband through the city of Portland in the 1920s. These funds are restricted for scholarships for talented, young musicians, ages 10-25, in the Greater Portland area.

Each year, FOKO holds auditions for students of classical music in organ, piano, voice and orchestral instruments. Area teachers and musicians serve as adjudicators, give written comments to each applicant and select scholarship recipients. Awards are presented at a Kotzschmar concert each spring.
