The education committee consisting of Ray Cornils, Nancy Wines-DeWan, Don Doele, Bob Judd, Kathy Grammer, Albert Melton, Bob Packard, and Judy Stallworth welcomed new member Bob Judd.
A subcommittee met with Mt. Ararat middle school teachers and scheduled another exciting session of Kotzschmar 4 Kids starting in April of 2009. Our goal is to continue with the K4K program with the intent of expanding it to other schools. This spring K Jr. will visit 300 4th and 5th graders at George E. Jack School in Standish, where the music and science portions of the K4K curriculum will be incorporated into their classroom units. Music teacher, Paul Schnell, will head up this effort. Paul’s years of experience as a dedicated music educator and church organist will be a vibrant addition to the program.
Ray had the opportunity this summer to meet with organists from around the country. He was able to preview some excellent material for curriculum used in the Twin Cities, Minneapolis and St. Paul. He also learned that we are the only group to have a successful in-classroom program in the public schools. We will have a subcommittee to review the Twin Cities’ curriculum and materials and take action to collaborate our efforts on these unique programs.
Another subcommittee headed by David Wallace is hard at work developing a docent training program to train volunteers to lead tours of the Kotzschmar. This will be a major focus for the year. Members interested in taking this training may contact the FOKO office.
